GAUSSIAN, short for "Galileo AUthentication and GNSS/INS platforms for Secure and Safe services In Air Navigation and mobility," tackles some security aspects of UAM applications by proposing a compact EGNSS-powered navigation system. GAUSSIAN integrates authenticated Galileo signals into a GNSS/INS platform for robustness against spoofing and leverages advancements in PNT technologies, including Galileo High Accuracy Service (HAS) corrections, for enhanced accuracy.
The project aligns with the European Commission's flight test recommendations for drone prototypes, planning demonstrations in Italy and Austria in the second half of the project. The consortium is guided by a leading European company in the field of high-tech inertial solutions and navigation systems and comprises partners with expertise in air mobility services and avionics, scientists engaged in R&D initiatives on GNSS signal processing, experts in the introduction of innovative technologies into emerging markets.
Starting from existing concepts and prototypes, GAUSSIAN paves the way to introduce innovative features in future products. It aims to enhance aircraft navigation safety for urban air mobility services, benefiting stakeholders and society through scientific, economic, technological, and social advancements.
GAUSSIAN's mission is to design, develop and showcase an integrated navigation platform tailored for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) applications which integrates distinguished features of Galileo. In addition, by integrating GNSS and INS measurements, GAUSSIAN aims at fortifying the resilience of avionic units against spoofing, ensuring higher data availability even in interfered environments.
Key objectives encompass enhancing positioning accuracy through the processing of the new Galileo E6 HAS and the showcasing of an integrated avionic prototype in operational scenarios.
The optimization of the SWaP - C factor is considered important for market entry, all while following main reference standards.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of UAM, GAUSSIAN envisions a future where aerial transportation seamlessly integrates into urban environments, revolutionizing the way people and goods move.
With a focus on harnessing the newest Galileo services into a hybrid GNSS/INS platform GAUSSIAN seeks to foster the full potential of eVTOL aircrafts, ensuring their viability as a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation.
Trying to address some of the current technical challenges, GAUSSIAN imagines a future where urban congestion and pollution are mitigated through the seamless integration of aerial mobility solutions, ultimately transforming the way we live, work, and travel.
